Michel Chion, Gloria. (MKCD015)

January 12th, 2007

Gloria opens with an innocent little tune which suggests without actually doing it that it could do some serious rollicking. Not until some talking, and a couple of explosive sounds, does the tune, now clearly played by an accordion, start to dance. That tune (variants of it) is whistled and sung, too, and it comes back at one point in the inbetweenradiostations sound. Stunning.

There’s a wide range of voice in this piece, from straight narrator-like talking to singing and shouting. The word “gloria” alone comes at us as pleading and screaming and mumbling and shouting. An exuberant and disturbing piece.
