You may be forgiven for expecting a piece that places you so precisely to give you the sonic equivalent of being at 2173 meters in the Alps (French Alps, of course). Maybe. After all, the first musique concrète piece, Étude aux chemins de fer is full of train sounds. And while many of the sounds, of water, of voices calling from a great distance, could easily have been collected in the alps, and even at 2173 meters, the piece is not “about” glaciers but about low frequencies and slow movement and spacious sounds. Hmmm. Maybe it is about glaciers. Well, whether you can picture an ice field in the alps while listening to this or not, the sounds themselves should captivate you. Highly recommended. (The liner notes to this piece are unusual for liner notes in that they are actually interesting and informative.)
