Jean-luc Guionnet, axène

Of the three pieces on this disc, the one entitled axène is by far the shortest. (Far meaning “more than ten minutes.”) Perhaps neither ivraie/baragnes nor ressac/ressac make such a good album name. Perhaps the notes are correct, and the principle of “axène” informs all three pieces. The piece so named has the most clearly defined contrasts (great swooping glissandi and chittering, clattering, clanking, gritty other loud noises) and so is the easiest to respond to on first hearing. But all three pieces reward repeated hearings quite well. And since they are all three very different each from each, this is a treat to own and play over and over again.

This disc was my first Ground Fault. On the strength of it, I looked for the distinctive Ground Fault covers every time I went to Amoeba Music. And began haunting the Ground Fault site. Only once did I find an album that failed me, and maybe it was my failure, not the disc’s.

    Présences électronique

Most of the names I did not recognize, which makes me even more sad that I cannot attend this year. But you can. And probably should. If you love your ears, attend this festival.

    SIME 2017

    24 – 28 April

Probably, though I'm not sure how it is possible, this will be the best SIME yet. Attend. Let me know.

    3-6 May

    Terrible Orchestra
    Echofluxx Ensemble

And film and more music and more performers. More of everything.

    Monaco Electroacoustique
